1809-СПБ MK Russian Empire Silver Rouble NGC MS-65 (FINEST CERTIFIED) St.Petersburg Mint

This is a silver ruble of the Russian Empire dated 1809 from the St. Petersburg mint (СПБ / CNB) with mint master initials MK, issued under Emperor Alexander I and graded NGC MS 65. The side featuring the imperial eagle shows the crowned double-headed eagle holding a scepter and orb, with the Moscow arms on its breast, the date 1809 above, and the surrounding legend “МОНЕТА РУБЛЬ.” The opposite side displays a crowned five-line inscription reading “ГОСУДАРСТВЕННАЯ РОССІЙСКАЯ МОНЕТА” within a laurel-and-oak wreath, with the mintmark СПБ below. In condition, the coin is outstanding, with fully original mint luster, a sharp strike, nearly pristine surfaces, and attractive light toning, fully justifying the high Mint State 65 grade. NGC has graded 32 coins overall, with 1 in this grade with none finer. This is a TOP-POP and is THE finest certified.

Struck during the middle years of Alexander I’s reign (1801–1825), this non-portrait “state coin” type continued the simplified design introduced after the death of Paul I. By 1809 Russia was deeply involved in the Napoleonic Wars (including the recent Finnish War against Sweden), and these large silver rubles helped support the wartime economy while maintaining the standardized weight and fineness established in earlier decades. The clean eagle-and-inscription format reflected a deliberate return to traditional imperial imagery and remained the standard for Russian silver rubles until the later introduction of portrait types under Alexander.
