1771-СПБ AW Russian Empire Silver Rouble NGC AU-55 St.Petersburg Mint

This is a silver ruble of the Russian Empire dated 1771 from the St. Petersburg mint (СПБ / CNB) with mint master initials AW, issued under Empress Catherine II and graded NGC AU 55. The obverse features a right-facing crowned and elaborately draped bust of Catherine the Great with detailed hair and facial features, surrounded by the Cyrillic legend “Б•М•ЕКАТЕРИНА•II•ІМП•ІСАМОДЕРЖ•ВСЕРОС” and the mintmark СПБ below. The reverse displays the crowned double-headed imperial eagle holding a scepter and orb, with the Moscow arms on its breast, the date 1771 above the central crown, and the legend “МОНЕТА РУБЛЬ” around the design. In condition, the coin shows strong remaining detail with light wear mainly on the highest points of the bust and eagle, attractive original luster beneath even toning, and only minor surface marks, fully consistent with a solid About Uncirculated grade. NGC has graded 17 coins overall, with 5 in this grade and 9 finer; there is only one Mint State example certified - MS-62.

Struck during the middle years of Catherine II’s long reign (1762–1796), this ruble belongs to the continuing standardized silver series that supported her expansive policies. By 1771 Catherine had already implemented major administrative reforms, expanded Russian territory through successful wars, and was actively promoting Enlightenment culture and education; these large silver rubles served as the principal high-value circulating currency of the growing empire and reinforced the visual continuity of imperial authority through the established double-eagle design.
