1766-СПБ AW Russian Empire Silver Rouble NGC AU Details St.Petersburg Mint

This is a silver ruble of the Russian Empire dated 1766 from the St. Petersburg mint (СПБ / CNB) with mint master initials AW, issued under Empress Catherine II and graded NGC AU Details (Cleaned). The obverse features a right-facing crowned and elaborately draped bust of Catherine the Great with a detailed hairstyle and facial profile, surrounded by the Cyrillic legend “Б•М•ЕКАТЕРИНА•II•ІМП•ІСАМОДЕРЖ•ВСЕРОС” and the mintmark СПБ below. The reverse shows the crowned double-headed imperial eagle holding a scepter and orb, with the Moscow arms on its breast, the date 1766 above the central crown, and the legend “МОНЕТА РУБЛЬ” around the design. In condition, the coin retains sharp details and strong relief consistent with About Uncirculated, but the surfaces exhibit signs of cleaning (hairlines and altered luster/toning), resulting in the “Details” designation.

Struck during the early years of Catherine II’s long and transformative reign (1762–1796), this ruble belongs to the continuing series of standardized silver coinage that helped finance her ambitious domestic reforms and territorial expansion. By 1766 Catherine was consolidating power after her 1762 coup, promoting Enlightenment ideals, reorganizing administration, and preparing the groundwork for later military successes; these large silver rubles remained the principal high-value circulating currency of the expanding Russian Empire and visually projected the empress’s authority through consistent imperial iconography.
