This BG-603 is a Period One (circa 1852–1857) California fractional native gold dollar attributed to the San Francisco jewelers Frontier & Deviercy (Pierre Frontier and Eugene Deviercy, often marked “FD”). It features a Liberty Head obverse on a round planchet. These early issues were produced to help fill the shortage of small-denomination coinage during the Gold Rush era, when federal silver and gold coins were scarce in California. Unlike the later Period Two souvenir pieces, Period One coins were generally closer to full intrinsic value and saw actual circulation.
Frontier & Deviercy were among the better-known French-origin jewelers making these private gold pieces. The BG-600 series (including nearby numbers such as BG-601 through BG-607) consists of rare to extremely rare dollar varieties. For example, this exact impaired coin sold in a 2013 Heritage Auction for $5,121. Strictly graded BG-600 examples have realized more than $80,000. Many rank Rarity-6 to Rarity-8 (or higher) in the Breen-Gillio reference, with only a handful of examples known for several of them. Survivors are highly prized by specialists assembling advanced Period One type or maker sets.
