Hershfield & Mitchell was a short-lived partnership of jewelers Reuben N. Hershfield and Noah Mitchell based in Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1871 they produced a limited number of California-style fractional gold coins, primarily 25-cent and 50-cent pieces marked with an “H,” which are classified as Period Two issues in the Breen-Gillio reference.
Although they marketed the pieces as tokens or charms, the U.S. Secret Service seized most of their production in August 1871 and arrested them for violating the Private Coinage Law of 1864. A Mint assay of one of their half-dollar pieces revealed it contained only about 17 cents’ worth of gold.
