The 1849 Liberty Seated dime is a rare survivor from a pivotal period in American monetary history. Although 839,000 pieces were minted, the California Gold Rush upset the traditional relationship between gold and silver. As gold flooded the market, silver became more valuable, prompting widespread hoarding and melting of silver coins, including Seated Liberty dimes.
Because so many were withdrawn from circulation and melted, only several hundred 1849 dimes are believed to survive today. PCGS and NGC have graded a combined 499 examples, representing just 0.059 percent of the original mintage. The issue is scarce in all grades and especially desirable to collectors seeking early Seated Liberty coinage.
This PCGS XF-45 example was recovered from the SS Central America and bears a gold pinch identifying its shipwreck provenance. The famed vessel sank in 1857 while carrying passengers, mail, and California gold. PCGS has graded 67 examples of the 1849 dime with a gold pinch from the SS Central America, with only 27 finer, making this piece a noteworthy combination of date rarity and historic significance.
