1883 Hawaiian Silver Dollar — AKAHI DALA PCGS MS-66 · CAC Endorsed

The silver coinage of the Kingdom of Hawaii stands among the most historically resonant numismatic episodes of the nineteenth century. Designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the United States Bureau of the Mint, and struck at the San Francisco Mint, the 1883 dollar was the product of a remarkable collaboration between a sovereign Pacific monarchy and the American federal mint system. The coinage emerged from negotiations brokered by sugar baron Claus Spreckels, who supplied the silver bullion and arranged for striking at San Francisco under the authority of the Hawaiian Coinage Law of 1880. The obverse depicts a right-facing bust of King Kalākaua with his name and KING OF HAWAII above; the reverse bears the Royal Arms surmounted by the Royal Crown and the Star of Kamehameha, with the denomination rendered in both English ("1 D") and Hawaiian ("AKAHI DALA"). The primary scholarly reference for the series remains the work of Gordon and Donald Medcalf, whose research established the bibliographic foundation that specialists continue to rely upon today.

The survival record for this issue is among the most dramatic in nineteenth-century American numismatics. Of the original 500,000 pieces struck — including 26 Proofs — only approximately 46,348 escaped the melting pot when much of the higher-value Kalākaua coinage was destroyed after Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1898. A redemption rate exceeding ninety percent reduced an already modest mintage to a fraction of its original size, and among survivors, worn and impaired pieces are the overwhelming norm. Original, problem-free Gem examples are genuinely rare at any grade, and at the MS-66 level, with CAC endorsement confirming premium quality within the grade, they are exceptional.

The provenance of this coin elevates it further still. Samuel Mills Damon was a figure of singular importance in Hawaiian history — partner of the Bank of Bishop & Company and Minister of Finance during the reign of King Kalākaua, a role he held intermittently from 1884 through 1900. His direct participation in the kingdom's financial affairs made him a natural and authoritative custodian of its most significant coinage. When Doyle New York auctioned his collection on March 23, 2006, the sale included six 1883 Hawaii Silver Dollars graded as Finest Known — a concentration of quality that reflects both the depth of the collection and Damon's proximity to the coins at the moment of their creation. That an original participant in the kingdom's monetary history preserved these pieces through annexation and the entire territorial period lends them a documentary authenticity no later collection can claim.
