Though uncertified, the coin was likely graded MS-63 and realized $18,000, acquired by the prominent Texas gold specialist Harry W. Bass, Jr.
Just one month later, New England Rare Coins offered a comparable Mint State-63 example in their metropolitan New York sale, though with somewhat less overall appeal than the Garrett piece; it brought $10,000. These auctions all occurred over 45 years ago!
