The 1807 Draped Bust Quarter Eagle marks the final year of this short-lived early gold series, struck to a modest mintage of just 6,812 pieces. Representing the BD-1 variety, the only die marriage known for the issue, it holds a distinct place in the study of early United States gold coinage. Even in lower grades, survivors are scarce, and the issue becomes particularly challenging when encountered in Mint State.
Gold coins were undervalued from 1795 to 1834, creating strong economic incentives for exportation and melting. As a result, many early quarter eagles, including the 1807, were removed from circulation and reduced for their bullion content. This widespread attrition accounts for the coin’s rarity today, with only a small portion of the original mintage believed to survive. NGC has graded just 125 examples across all levels of preservation.
