Struck at the Carson City Mint, the 1883-CC Liberty Head half eagle is among the scarcer gold issues produced during the later years of that frontier facility. Its original mintage was only 12,958 pieces, a modest figure even by Carson City standards. Many examples entered circulation in the West, where gold coinage saw everyday use in commerce, leaving relatively few survivors in collectible grades today.
In moderately circulated condition, the issue reveals the character of a coin that clearly performed its intended monetary role. A VF-35 example retains strong central detail in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s wings while still displaying the honest wear expected from a gold coin that circulated during the late nineteenth century.
Numismatist David Akers once observed that the 1883-CC is “very rare and underrated in all grades” and described it as “one of the most underrated dates of the series.” Population data supports this reputation for scarcity. PCGS has graded only 9 examples at VF-35, with 135 certified finer, underscoring the challenge of locating high-quality representatives of this elusive Carson City half eagle.
