The 1883-CC Liberty Head eagle is a popular rarity of the Carson City Mint. There was a mintage of just 12,000 pieces, and most examples immediately entered Western commerce. In the mining camps and frontier towns of the American West, hard money was preferred, as many Westerners distrusted paper money and relied on gold and silver for everyday transactions.
Because nearly the entire mintage circulated, high-grade survivors are elusive today. Carson City specialist Rusty Goe estimates that only about 2% of the original 1883-CC eagle mintage survives in any grade. Most known pieces show clear evidence of use, reflecting the coin’s role in the economic life of Nevada and the broader frontier economy.
This NGC AU-58 example stands out for its simply great color, a quality that adds immediate visual appeal to an already scarce issue. NGC has graded only 24 coins at the AU-58 level, with just 10 finer, underscoring the limited number of high-end survivors from this historic Carson City gold emission. The finest grade at NGC is only MS61, making this offering near the top of the graded population.
