With a mintage of just 21,335 pieces, it ranks among the lowest-production Liberty Head eagles from this mint, reflecting limited output during a period when New Orleans gold coinage was already sporadic.
Most examples saw extensive commercial use or were later melted, leaving relatively few survivors in Mint State. The issue is especially notable for its difficulty above the lower uncirculated levels, as truly choice examples are seldom encountered. NGC has graded 159 coins at the MS62 level, with only 19 examples certified finer, underscoring the challenge of locating higher-end representatives.
Struck in classic Liberty Head style, the 1888-O eagle combines historic scarcity with strong collector demand.
