The official mintage for all 1797 silver dollars is just 7,776 pieces, and survival rates are exceptionally low, especially for distinct die varieties such as this BB-72 with the dramatic 9x7 Stars arrangement and Small Letters reverse.
This BB-72 variety is genuinely scarce. PCGS has graded only 22 examples of this marriage in total across all grades. Of those, just two have been certified in VF20, with only 15 examples graded finer. The finest known at PCGS is AU53, underscoring how elusive higher-grade survivors are for this specific die pairing.
The 9x7 Stars configuration reflects the Mint’s ongoing struggle to balance political symbolism with practical design, capturing an experimental phase in early federal coinage. Combined with the Small Letters reverse, this piece stands as a distinctive and historically rich survivor from the earliest days of the U.S. silver dollar series.
