The 1910 $10 Indian Head Eagle represents one of the most distinctive chapters in American gold coinage. Struck near the beginning of the series, this example is certified PCGS MS-63, with PCGS reporting 1,670 coins graded at this level and 660 finer. The issue reflects the execution of a design that had already redefined the artistic direction of U.S. coinage.
This is a beautiful, original coin carrying Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic design, notable for its bold, sculptural relief and classical sensibility. The obverse presents a powerful reinterpretation of Liberty, while the reverse eagle conveys strength and balance, hallmarks of Saint-Gaudens’ artistic vision during the early 20th-century renaissance of American coin art.
The Indian feather headdress, however, was not purely the sculptor’s invention. That creative input was dictated by President Theodore Roosevelt, whose forceful “bully pulpit” approach shaped the final appearance of the coin. Saint-Gaudens, deeply respectful of Roosevelt’s authority and enthusiasm for artistic reform, simply could not say no, resulting in one of the most memorable designs ever placed on a U.S. gold coin.
