The 1914-D Indian Head Quarter Eagle stands apart from its series siblings because its mintage of 448,000 was respectable, however it is difficult to locate examples in MS65 and MS65+; none were graded above those gem grades by PCGS. PCGS has graded 1,508 in MS63 with 1,081 finer.
The surfaces typically show warm honey-gold color with faint rose and green iridescence near the devices—hallmarks of originality rather than later cleaning or dipping. Light scattered marks and a few tiny ticks are expected at this grade, yet the overall eye appeal remains strong because the luster is thick and frosty.
What makes the 1914-D particularly interesting is the visible die polish lines and minor die cracks that appear on many known examples, giving each coin its own distinct personality. In an incuse design series where strike weakness is common, a solidly struck MS-63 represents one of the finer balanced combinations of technical quality and aesthetic charm the date has to offer.
