The 1926 $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is part of the series designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, minted from 1908 to 1929. Its distinctive feature is the incuse design, in which the devices and lettering are recessed below the coin's surface rather than raised—a technique unique to this and the contemporaneous $5 half eagle, making them the only U.S. coins struck in this manner.
The obverse shows a Native American chief in profile wearing a full feathered headdress, surrounded by "LIBERTY" above, 13 stars, and the date below. The reverse depicts a majestic bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, with inscriptions including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2 1/2 DOLLARS."
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 446,000, the 1926 ranks among the more available dates in the series. A PCGS MS-63 grade indicates a choice uncirculated example with attractive frosty luster, sharp details, and minor contact marks typical of the grade.
