The 1899 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of just under 1.7 million pieces, reflecting the abundant gold supply from ongoing mining operations in the late 19th century. PCGS has graded 10,746 in MS62 with 9,696 finer.
This Type 3 design, introduced in 1877, features the denomination spelled out as "TWENTY DOLLARS" on the reverse, a change from earlier versions.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse shows Liberty in left-facing profile, wearing a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY," with her hair tied back and curls cascading down. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, and the date appears below. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a shield on its chest and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" above.
Graded PCGS MS-62, this uncirculated example exhibits typical light contact marks and hairlines consistent with brief handling or storage in mint bags, yet it retains strong original luster and eye appeal for a coin over 125 years old. Many similar pieces were later melted under 1930s regulations, reducing the number of high-grade survivors.
