The 1851 Liberty Head Double Eagle is a desirable issue from the first full year of regular $20 gold production at the Philadelphia Mint. PCGS has graded 252 as XF45 with 769 finer.
Struck in the midst of the California Gold Rush, most 1851 double eagles quickly entered circulation and saw heavy use, leaving relatively few survivors in mint state grades today. This particular example, graded PCGS XF-45, retains sharp details on Liberty’s hair and coronet, along with much of the original design definition on the reverse shield and eagle.
Recovered from the 1857 wreck of the SS Central America, this coin is designated as SSCA treasure piece #6625. Of the thousands of gold coins lost when the ship sank in a hurricane off the Carolinas, only 29 examples of the 1851 double eagle were brought up during the 1980s–1990s salvage operations.
The combination of an early-date Type 1 double eagle, documented shipwreck recovery, and complete original packaging makes this a well-preserved relic of mid-19th-century American maritime and monetary history.
