In January 1861, Assistant Engraver Anthony C. Paquet shipped new reverse dies to both Philadelphia and San Francisco. His design used taller, thinner letters and slightly larger stars and devices than James B. Longacre’s standard reverse.
Philadelphia halted production almost immediately due to complaints that the new borders were too thin and chipped easily. San Francisco, however, struck an estimated 19,250 pieces before the recall order arrived. Most entered Western commerce and circulated heavily.
This PCGS XF-40 shows moderate even wear, with Liberty’s hair curls and coronet still well-defined and the diagnostic Paquet lettering crisp and unmistakable. Light abrasions and rim bruises are consistent with brief circulation. Original golden surfaces retain subtle luster in protected areas. It remains a rare survivor of a design that lasted only weeks before being permanently retired.
