Struck in the year Nevada’s silver boom was waning but gold demand remained strong, this $5 piece bears the distinctive “CC” mintmark below the eagle on the reverse. Its surviving population reflects a relatively generous original mintage of 208,000 pieces, combined with modest commercial circulation in the sparsely populated West.
Numismatist David Akers notes that the 1891-CC is the most common Carson City mint $5 Liberty in all grades and the most frequently encountered date in Mint State. Many examples were preserved in bank vaults or returned from limited circulation, resulting in a higher-than-average survival rate for the series.
