CAC. The 1851 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle, the second issue of its series, emerged from the Philadelphia Mint during the California Gold Rush’s peak. Nearly an ounce of .900 fine gold, it bears Christian Gobrecht’s iconic design: Liberty in a coronet encircled by thirteen stars on the obverse, and a majestic heraldic eagle clutching arrows and olive branch on the reverse.
A mere 33 coins of this date were brought up by the Columbus America Group. This specimen, graded PCGS XF-45, displays honest circulation wear that softens high points while preserving sharp detail in Liberty’s flowing hair, coronet ribbons, and the eagle’s textured feathers. Even, warm honey-gold coloration blankets both sides, with faint contact marks that underscore its journey through 19th-century commerce rather than diminish its appeal.
Its provenance is extraordinary: recovered from the S.S. Central America, the “Ship of Gold” that sank in 1857 while carrying California treasure to New York. Inventory #6617 from the salvage, this double eagle lay 8,000 feet deep for 131 years until modern recovery efforts resurfaced it. The wreck’s gold linked East Coast finance to Western mines, and this coin embodies that perilous transcontinental lifeline.
