The 1899 Liberty Head Double Eagle would be a great coin to add to your collection. NGC has graded 3,916 as MS62 with 2,075 finer.
Designed by James B. Longacre, its obverse features a profiled Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars. The reverse showcases a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, encircled by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY D.” Struck in 90% gold, the double eagle was a workhorse of late 19th-century commerce.
Minted at Philadelphia, the 1899 issue saw a robust production of 2,010,300 pieces. Despite the high mintage, few survived in high grade due to heavy circulation and melting during the 1933 gold recall. The coin’s bold design and substantial weight make it a favorite among type collectors.
Graded NGC MS-62, this example exhibits sharp details with light contact marks and attractive luster typical of the grade. It represents a well-preserved survivor from the final decade of the Liberty Head series, which ended in 1907.
