The 1878 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin, minted in Philadelphia, features a design by James B. Longacre depicting Liberty as an Indian princess in a feathered headdress on the obverse, with a reverse showing "III" in a wreath of corn, wheat, tobacco, and cotton. With a mintage of 82,304 pieces, it was produced amid post-Civil War efforts to bolster gold reserves for specie resumption, even though the denomination saw limited circulation.
Ron Guth writes in PCGS Coinfacts, “The 1878 is known for its frosty luster which, on high grade pieces, has a shimmering effect that is simply lovely. The strike is usually good, but sometimes weak on the knot at the base of the wreath.” PCGS has graded 812 as MS64 with 406 finer. Collector’s Universe (CU) gives this issue a price of $7,500 in MS64. Save $2,750 off the CU price when you buy this coin!
