The 1799 $10 Draped Bust to Right, Large Eagle, Large Stars Obverse is a rare and coveted early American gold coin. Graded PCGS MS-64+, this coin exhibits exceptional luster and sharp details, with only minor imperfections, making it a standout specimen for collectors of early U.S. gold coinage. PCGS has graded only 3 as MS64+ with 12 finer. The mintage was 37,449. Of those, only 300 to 400 examples are known today. Why is it so rare? Because in his Mint Report, Alexander Hamilton’s silver/gold ratio of 15:1 undervalued gold and such coins were exported.
Writes economist Arthur B. Woodford, “as early as 1798 it was stated in Congress that a large quantity [of gold $10 Eagles] had been seen in a goldsmith’s window in England.” Upon hearing this news, one Congressman exclaimed, “Thus easily do our eagles take their flight.” The small number of survivors that exist today, including this pristine example from AU Capital Management, were mostly housed in the First Bank of the United States and the Second Bank of the United States.
