Here is an attractive—and quite rare—gold piece to add to your collection. The 1852-C $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, minted in Charlotte, has a mintage of 72,574. Doug Winter writes, “The 1852-C is reasonably easy to locate in the lower circulated grades and is only marginally scarce in the lower About Uncirculated grade range. It is scarce in AU55 to AU58 and very scarce in Uncirculated.”
PCGS has graded 12 pieces as MS61 with only 15 finer. In its assigned grade of MS61, this example displays a sharp strike, lustrous surfaces, and an orange-gold hue, with minor contact marks typical of the grade. Mint State coins are rare. Although several dozen such pieces are reported by the grading services, Southern gold expert Doug Winter estimates that as few as 15 to 20 true Uncirculated coins may survive. Nearly half of the Mint State pieces available graded no finer than MS61. This coin is a desirable piece for branch mint gold collectors, offering a balance of historical significance and rarity in its MS61 grade. (Not yet sent to CAC for further endorsement.)
