Minted in Philadelphia with a proof mintage of 160, the 1906 $2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle features Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty coronet design and reverse eagle. Graded PCGS Proof 61, it shows sharp details, reflective fields, and light cameo contrast, with minor hairlines or marks typical for the grade. PCGS has graded 12 as PR61 with 104 finer. Collector’s Universe (CU) gives this issue a price of $4,750 in PR61. Save over $1,300 off the CU price when you buy this coin!
David Akers states, “The 1906 is a scarce proof issue, but it is not as rare as some earlier dates in the series.”
The Philadelphia Mint slightly increased coinage of proof quarter eagles in 1906, to 160 pieces. The coins were delivered in four batches throughout the year. A single pair of dies was used to strike all the proofs. The reverse die has a lump near the bottom of the fifth vertical clear space in the shield, making it easy to distinguish between proofs and prooflike business strikes. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 100-120 examples in all grades.
