Between September 1836 and May 1838, the Bechtler family, prominent private gold coiners in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, produced their sixth series of gold coins, including this circa 1837 $5 gold piece, as gold inflows from North and South Carolina reached $770,329. With Christopher Bechtler retired, his son Augustus oversaw operations, adapting to the U.S. government's new standard of 26.8 grains per dollar. The coins retained the "CAROLINA GOLD" legend but adjusted to 21 carats, with the half eagle's weight reduced from 140 to 134 grains and the reintroduction of stars in the design.

This period marked a significant output of private coinage, filling a critical gap before the establishment of the Charlotte Mint, as the Bechtlers provided reliable currency for the region's gold rush economy. The present K-20 $5 gold half eagle is an exceptional survivor, showcasing smooth, lustrous and prooflike surfaces with only trivial abrasions for its lofty grade near Choice AU grade. The obverse boldly declares "CAROLINA GOLD" and a 134-grain weight inscription above a five-pointed star, and "21 CARATS" below, while the reverse identifies "C: BECHTLER AT RUTHERF:". A minor planchet flaw is visible at the 12:00 obverse rim and slight strike weakness at 9 o'clock on the reverse ("GOLD") do little to detract from the coin’s sharp primary designs and overall beauty. This piece stands as a superlative example of early American private gold coinage, offering discerning collectors a rare combination of historical significance, quality, and visual appeal that is difficult to surpass.
