In December 1999, the New York City Sotheby's Auction House featured the S.S. Central America’s treasure allocated to the 1857 underwriters. One lot, described as being 749.62 grams of placer gold nuggets sold for $42,500—over six times the melt value at $279.25 per ounce—while 2,082.11 grams of fine gold dust and flakes fetched $45,000, nearly three times the melt value.
