AU Capital Management: The Bass 1852-O $20 Gold Coin

AU Capital Management President Russ Augustin teams up with CoinWeek to tell the behind-the-scenes stories of the great gold coins of American history.

In this episode, Russ talks about the 1852-O $20 Liberty Head Type 1 Double Eagle.

This is one of the finest, and perhaps the ultimate finest example of the issue, which boasts a low mintage and is rarely found in uncirculated condition.

The 1852-O $20 Liberty is one of a list of sleeper “rarities” in the Type 1 Double Eagle series and a coin that serious numismatists should know about before building the next great gold coin collection.

According to PCGS population reports, only 19 examples of the issue have been certified in Mint State. Only two of these have earned the grade MS62+, while the rest have graded lower. A single example at NGC has earned a gem grade of MS65, but as you will see in this video, that coin has a noticeable issue that may impact its appeal for some collectors of the series.

Given the coin’s extreme scarcity in Mint State, the Bass 1852-O $20 gold coin is a hidden gem that has only been available on the market a few times since it appeared in the 1970s.

Russ Augustin provides some of the back story behind this fantastic coin, it is a coin that is currently available on his website.
