First year of the Heraldic Eagle dime, and the marriage type collectors can actually pursue. Philadelphia recorded 27,550 dimes dated 1798 across four die pairings; JR-1 is the 1798/7 overdate with sixteen reverse stars, second only to the JR-4 Large 8 in availability. The obverse is a leftover 1797 die, overdated with an 8 punch far too small—the tail of the 7 remains plain under and left of the 8. The reverse, crowded with sixteen stars after Tennessee’s 1796 admission, was first used on the 1797 BD-1 quarter eagle. Die steel was scarce; Scot reused it here before Elias Boudinot abandoned the extra-star experiment and returned to thirteen. Combined survivors of both 1798/7 reverses number fewer than about 500.
Diagnostics for the JR-1 die marriage include the 16 Stars Reverse and the Small 8 punched over an underlying 7. This Choice VF representative exhibits hints of violet and gold on the obverse, while bluish patina dominates the reverse. Lightly abraded but undeniably strong and attractive for the assigned grade—an honest, colorful example of the overdate and the shared gold-and-silver reverse.
