Boldly defined with vivid medium-gold patina, both sides retain nearly complete luster in a vibrant satiny texture. The rim filing is not readily evident through the PCGS holder; accuracy alone requires mention of a few wispy hairlines in the center of the obverse. More than a century after issue—the 100th anniversary having passed in 2015—this remains one of the most sought-after classic commemoratives - and arguably one of the most sought-after of all U.S. coins - therefore serious demand for well-preserved examples has only grown over time. The rims show a minor fault addressed long ago, yet the devices and heft of this elegant gold piece are intact.
Athena (Minerva) appears on the obverse with her helmet tilted back, a classical sign of peace. The reverse owl perched among immense pine cones evokes the Sierra Nevada, not far from San Francisco, where the coin was struck for the 1915 Exposition. Designed by Robert Aitken, the round $50 is the scarcer of the two massive Panama-Pacific fifties: of 1,510 pieces coined, only 483 were distributed and the rest melted.
