1881-dated California Gold Token, Indian Head – Wreath #7, “1/4”, Octagonal, 9.2 mm.
This is a private-issue California gold token/charm (Period 2 style, post-1864 restrictions). It features an Indian head (with 13 five-pointed stars) on the obverse and an old-style wreath reverse containing “1/4 CAL.GOLD *” (or similar). Mike Locke’s classification (CalGoldCoin.com) lists matching varieties under Wreath #7. These were likely produced by the California Jewelry Co. or successors around the dated year. Diameter matches the typical ~9.2–9.5 mm for octagonal 1/4-size pieces. They are distinct from the earlier true circulating California fractional gold (BG numbers) but are collected alongside them as Western souvenir tokens. A similar 1876 Octagonal 1/4 Indian / Wreath #7, NGC MS-63, sold for $780 (Stack’s Bowers, February 2026, James A. Stack Sr. Collection).
