These are small private-issue California gold charms/tokens (often ~9.5–10 mm diameter, typically low-karat gold or gold-plated, non-denominated “charms” rather than circulating fractional gold). The design shows a miner holding a pickaxe on the obverse (sometimes with “H” or other maker marks) and a reverse with a “Q” (or similar letter/wreath design). They are attributed to makers like Herman J. Brand or related jewelers and fall under California fractional/souvenir gold tokens or “Period 2” issues.
