1876 California Fractional Gold 25C Liberty Head Round NGC MS-66 Prooflike BG-856
A coin that should not EXIST-! This is a very rare Period Two California Fractional quarter that stands among the most elusive of its kind, struck by Herman J. Brand. First brought to light by author and numismatist Kenneth W. Lee sometime between 1955 and 1970 and formally recorded by him in 1970, this variety remains a true prize for specialists. The Breen-Gillio census accounts for only seven known specimens; the present Superb Gem ranks head-and-shoulders above this Census - by two full grades! Warm honey-gold toning accentuates a sharp, confident strike and attractively preserved surfaces. Within the distinctive “Baby Head” family of 1876 round twenty-five-cent pieces—itself limited to just three BG numbers—BG-856 holds the distinction of being the rarest. Collectors Universe has a published price for a 64 grade at $4,250. We're guessing our ask price is probably on this light side?
