Nero Aureus with Salus Reverse, Rome Mint, circa AD 65–67
Among the most aesthetically refined gold coinage of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, this aureus was struck during the mature phase of Nero's reign, when the imperial mint at Rome achieved a standard of die cutting rarely surpassed in ancient numismatics. The obverse presents a laureate portrait of the emperor facing right, rendered with the characteristic full-faced, almost baroque modeling that defines late Neronian portraiture — the heavy jaw, elaborate coiffure, and layered neck folds marking this as an unmistakable product of the AD 65–67 period.
The reverse is devoted to Salus, the personification of health, safety, and the welfare of the Roman state. She is depicted draped and seated left upon an ornamented throne, extending a patera in her right hand in an act of ritual offering, while her left hand rests composed at her side. The exergual inscription SALVS grounds the type firmly within the ideological program of Neronian propaganda, projecting imperial benevolence and civic stability at a moment of growing internal tension. A coin of considerable historical resonance and outstanding artistic merit.
