CAC. The year 1859 marks a quiet but consequential turning point in American numismatic history. It was the first in which the Mint formally recorded the number of Proof gold and silver coins struck — an institutional acknowledgment of a collecting public that Mint Director James Ross Snowden had been actively cultivating since the late 1850s. The 1859 Proof dollar was produced in greater numbers than any of its predecessors, with 800 pieces struck. Yet mintage and survival are different matters entirely. Numismatic scholars estimate that only some 450 examples were distributed to contemporary collectors; the balance were either melted or, more probably, released into commercial channels where their Proof character went unrecognized. American numismatics was still in its infancy, and the Mint would continue overestimating collector demand well into the early 1860s. What survives today, then, represents a fraction of an already modest issue.

This example is further distinguished as the Breen-5457 variety, identified by a repunched 1 at the base of the date — a diagnostic that rewards the specialist and adds a layer of technical interest beyond the issue's considerable intrinsic appeal. PCGS has certified 52 examples in PR64, with 21 grading finer — a population that confirms the grade as a meaningful ceiling for most collectors pursuing this date. CAC's endorsement data sharpens the picture further: just 14 PR64 examples carry the green bean, with only 7 finer. This coin is among them, its quality affirmed by the most demanding set of eyes in the hobby. Last seen publicly on March 25, 2010, where it was sold by Heritage as lot #1237 in the ANA Mid-Winter Signature Sale for $6,038.

The surfaces present as one would hope from a coin of this pedigree: deeply reflective fields, well-defined design elements, and the kind of originality that CAC's standards are specifically calibrated to identify and reward. For the Proof Liberty Seated specialist or the advanced Type collector seeking a coin that satisfies on every level — grade, variety, and third-party endorsement — this near-Gem 1859 represents a genuinely complete package in a series where complete packages are rarely assembled.
