Greece Myrina 2nd Cent. BC AR Tetradrachm NGC Ancients Ch AU

★STAR designation. This is a silver tetradrachm from Myrina in Aeolis (northwestern Asia Minor), dated circa 155–145 BC still exists with a perfectly original strike and perfectly original sufaces. It belongs to the stephanophoric ("wreath-bearing") series, issued by several Aeolian cities (including Myrina, Cyme, Aigai) during a period of autonomy under Pergamon's influence and Roman protection after the Treaty of Apamea (188 BC). The obverse features the laureate head of Apollo right, with detailed youthful features and braided hair, symbolizing divine beauty, prophecy, and patronage. The reverse features Apollo Grynios (Gryneios) standing right, usually nude or half-draped, holding a filleted laurel branch in his left hand and a phiale (libation bowl) in his right; at his feet right, an omphalos (sacred navel stone, evoking Delphi’s oracle) and an amphora; control monogram to left; city ethnic MYPINAIΩN (“of the Myrinaeans”) nearby; the entire design enclosed within a large laurel wreath. This handsome specimen displays even toning with iridescent highlights of fiery intensity. It is well struck and quite attractive. BMC-17.136,14.

Context: Myrina was a coastal Aeolian city linked to the important nearby sanctuary of Apollo Gryneios at Gryneion/Gryneum, renowned for its oracle and temple. The coin promotes this cult: Apollo as civic patron, the omphalos tying to oracular prestige, and the wreath signaling prosperity and civic pride during Hellenistic independence before full Roman incorporation (after 133 BC Pergamon bequest).
