Unlike his father, Ptolemy III, Ptolemy IV is portrayed by Greek historians as weak, corrupt, debauched, and dominated by court favorites and ministers. His accession involved murdering relatives (including his mother Berenice II and brother). While he achieved a major military victory at the Battle of Raphia (217 BC) against Antiochus III in the Fourth Syrian War—using large numbers of native Egyptian troops for the first time—this success was short-lived. His inattentive rule, indulgence in pleasures (including Dionysian cults), and reliance on incompetent advisors led to administrative decline, loss of overseas territories, sporadic native revolts, and the beginning of long-term weakening. The empowerment of native Egyptians at Raphia contributed to later uprisings. Ptolemy III left Egypt at its zenith; Ptolemy IV initiated the dynasty's gradual erosion, setting the stage for losses under his successors.
