Struck during a period of rapid design experimentation, early 1878 dollars display multiple obverse and reverse combinations as Mint officials refined dies and production methods.
This example features the 7 Tail feather obverse paired with the Reverse of 1878, an early and short-lived configuration distinguished by its parallel arrow feather tips and distinctive eagle style. Adding further interest is the VAM-33 attribution, known as the Doubled Legs variety, where clear doubling is visible on the eagle’s legs beneath the tail feathers. This dramatic die variety is among the most recognizable of the first-year Morgans.
Graded PCGS MS-64, the coin shows strong luster and sharp design detail consistent with careful die preparation and limited early use. PCGS reports 81 examples graded at this level, with just 34 finer, underscoring its solid standing within the condition census for this popular and historically significant variety.
