The 1853-O $1 Liberty Head Gold Dollar, Type 1, is a distinctive Southern gold issue struck at the New Orleans Mint during the early years of the denomination. Designed by James B. Longacre, the petite gold dollar features the small Liberty head portrait that defines the Type 1 series, produced from 1849 through 1854.
The $1 gold piece was conceived and produced as a direct result of the California Gold Rush, which dramatically increased the nation’s gold supply. Congress authorized the denomination through the Coinage Act of 1849, legislation that also created the $20 Liberty Head double eagle, first released into circulation in 1850. Together, these coins reshaped American gold coinage for a rapidly expanding economy.
