1800 $1 Draped Bust Silver Dollar PCGS AU-55 BB-193, Ex.Warren Miller Collection

BB-193 Die State III (B-18). This example ranks among the finest known for the 1800 BB-193 die marriage, placing it high in the Condition Census for the variety.

The surfaces display an attractive satiny silver-gray patina, enlivened by delicate golden highlights on the obverse and subtler gold and lavender toning on the reverse. Both sides retain abundant softly frosted mint luster. The strike is sharp throughout, and preservation is exceptional, showing only minimal high-point friction and a few insignificant marks that are barely visible without magnification. Overall, a choice representative for the type, variety, and grade.

The 1800 BB-193 is one of the most available die marriages of the year, roughly tying with BB-187 for greatest rarity. Survival estimates range from 76 to 200 pieces. What was once separately classified as Bolender-18 is now correctly understood by specialists as a later die state of BB-193, distinguished by heavy die clashing.

This coin represents that advanced B-18 state, with the reverse exhibiting severe clashing in the upper right field that ultimately caused a prominent die crack along the border outside the letters of AMERICA. It served as the plate coin for the BB-193 listing in Q. David Bowers’ 2013 reference, The Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars: 1794-1804, and is specifically cited in the author’s roster of Notable Specimens.
