Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the incuse portrait of an American Indian and the recessed reverse eagle give the type a distinctive appearance very different from earlier raised-relief gold designs. By 1929, production levels reflected diminishing use of gold coinage in everyday commerce.
Examples certified MS-63 often show a pleasing balance between sharp detail and light marks from contact, typical of the grade. On this issue, the incuse design tends to protect the highest elements, allowing feather detail and facial features to remain well defined even when minor abrasions are present. Original surfaces and natural coloration are especially important considerations for the date.
The CAC endorsement on this PCGS MS-63 example indicates quality within the grade, as well as originality and solid overall eye appeal. As a late-date representative of the Indian Head quarter eagle series, the 1929 issue illustrates both the artistic ambitions of early 20th-century U.S. coinage and the closing chapter of circulating gold before the economic disruptions of the early 1930s.
