The 1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is a classic early U.S. silver coin designed by John Reich and modified by William Kneass. This example is the O-112 variety, identified by its distinctive Square Base 2 and Small 8s in the date, and Large Letters on the reverse. PCGS has graded only 29 of the 0-112 variety, with 3 in AU50 and 11 finer.
With a mintage of over 3.07 million for the year, the 1828 half dollar remains available in circulated grades, yet choice About Uncirculated pieces like this one are less common due to heavy commercial use, as well as extensive export to both China and Canada.
Both sides of the coin display an attractive warm reddish-brown patina that has developed naturally over nearly two centuries. This original skin is consistent and undisturbed, adding character while preserving the underlying surfaces.
