Of the BB-190 variety, PCGS has graded 3 as XF-40, with 15 finer; across all 1800 dollars, just 8 are certified at XF-40 with 23 finer. These figures underscore the scarcity of problem-free, mid-grade survivors, especially for a variety defined by its distinct date placement and subtle numeral alignment.
Although the reported mintage was 220,920 pieces, only about 2,300 examples are believed to exist today. Much of this attrition is tied to heavy use in the China trade, where American dollars were valued for their silver content and often remained overseas. As a result, surviving pieces like this circulated piece are rare, for, after arriving in China, most of this issue was melted into Chinese sycee bullion.
