The 1797 Draped Bust silver dollar, BB-72 variety, is among the more elusive issues of the early federal series. Distinguished by its 9x7 star arrangement and Small Letters reverse, it represents a scarce die pairing from a year already known for limited and irregular production. Survivors are few, and examples with strong detail are especially difficult to locate. This is a rare coin in any grade, in fact, one of the rarest for the entire Early Dollar series. It's usually the "stopper" coin for those building out variety sets.
Certified XF-45 by Professional Coin Grading Service, this piece sits near the upper end of the known population. PCGS has graded only 22 examples of BB-72 in all grades, with just two at the XF-45 level and only four finer. Such a narrow distribution underscores the rarity and desirability of the variety among advanced collectors.
