SS Central America. This 15.2-gram natural gold nugget from the S.S. Central America shipwreck is one of the most celebrated California Gold Rush-era nuggets ever recovered. Discovered during the 1988–1991 salvage of the famous “Ship of Gold,” which sank in a hurricane on September 12, 1857, while carrying a fortune in San Francisco gold to New York, the nugget was part of the commercial shipment and passenger holdings lost at 8,000 feet depth off South Carolina.Unlike the thousands of freshly minted 1857-S $20 Double Eagles aboard, this pristine, water-worn placer nugget was never melted. Its rough, natural surface and documented shipwreck origin make it extraordinarily rare—few large Gold Rush nuggets survived the era intact. Recovered by Tommy Thompson’s Columbus-America Discovery Group, the 15.2 g (0.49 oz) piece has been certified and encapsulated by PCGS.
