The 1910 Saint-Gaudens $20 double eagle features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design of Liberty striding forward with a torch and olive branch, backed by a soaring eagle over a rising sun. CAC Grading has graded 8 as MS64 with none finer. In CAC, there are 200 in MS64 with 23 finer.
Production reached 482,000 pieces, struck during a period of strong demand for gold coinage in commerce. Dies were well-prepared, yielding sharp details in Liberty’s gown and the Capitol building. Survivability in high grades remains good due to the coin’s size and weight.
CAC MS64 examples show strong luster with minimal marks, typically light scuffs in open fields or on Liberty’s legs. The grade reflects excellent eye appeal for a business strike from the early 20th century series.
David Akers writes, “The 1910 is invariably well struck and the surfaces are always the "soft" frosty type. Lustre on this issue is usually very good and the color is typically medium yellow or orange gold.”
