The 1843-C $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle stands as a testament to early American gold coinage, struck at the Charlotte Mint in North Carolina during a pivotal era of expansion. NGC has graded 21 as AU58 with 14 finer.
This particular example, graded AU-58 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), retains remarkable detail and luster, with only light friction on Liberty's cheek and the eagle's breast.
Jeff Garrett writes, “The vast majority of the 1843-C half eagles seen are in the grade range of Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Problem-free coins are the exception for this heavily circulated issue. This issue becomes increasingly rare in high grade, and there are only about a dozen examples of the date known in Mint State.”
