Gold specialist Doug Winter writes of the Prooflike 1857-S examples: "These are some of the most visually arresting coins from the shipwreck .... These are no doubt very scarce and very flashy coins..." Winter reports that only 23 of that massive hoard of 5,000 1857-S double eagles were awarded PL (Prooflike) designation by PCGS.
The 1857-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle was struck at the San Francisco Mint amid the California Gold Rush. Graded PCGS MS-63, it remains uncirculated, showing full mint luster and crisp strike, as well as stunning prooflike surfaces. The CAC sticker gives it extra value and prestige.
This example, serial #2871 (Variety 20C), survived the 1857 sinking of the SS Central America, a sidewheel steamer lost in a hurricane off South Carolina while carrying California gold eastward.
