A striking and scarce issue from the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors, this denarius boldly proclaims Libertas Restituta—the restoration of liberty—symbolized by Libertas with the pileus of freedom. Vitellius, the affable yet opportunistic noble favored under Nero and later governor of Africa, was acclaimed emperor by the Rhine legions on 1 January 69 CE amid widespread resentment toward Galba’s stinginess and harsh rule. After Otho’s coup murdered Galba and Piso in the Forum, Vitellius’ forces crushed Otho at the First Battle of Bedriacum in April, allowing his triumphant entry into Rome as self-proclaimed restorer of stability. His eight-month reign quickly collapsed under legendary excess—lavish banquets and fiscal mismanagement chronicled by Suetonius—alienating Senate and populace alike. The Libertas type proved ironic propaganda, as early eastern support for Vespasian led to defeat at the Second Battle of Bedriacum in October. Abandoned and captured in Rome, Vitellius was executed on 20 December 69 CE, his body dragged through the streets. These rare high-grade denarii survive as poignant relics of a fleeting regime that promised freedom but succumbed to gluttony and civil strife. Most of the coinage bearing Vitellius' likeness was melted to abolish his memory and promote the future emperiors. Deep old toning, sharp portrait, and strong reverse detail.
